History
Through-running began on the Tobu side first. When the line's northern section opened on 31 May 1962, mutual through-services with the Tobu Isesaki Line started, initially reaching Kita-Koshigaya. This made the Hibiya Line the first Tokyo Metro (then Teito Rapid Transit Authority) line to through-run with a private railway, and the second Tokyo subway line to do so after the Toei Asakusa Line. The Tobu connection transformed travel along the Isesaki corridor: where commuters had previously changed at Kita-Senju or terminated at Asakusa, they could now ride directly to Ueno and Ginza. Demand far exceeded forecasts — all-day through-passengers from the Tobu Isesaki Line onto the Hibiya Line rose from about 15,658 in 1962 to about 86,094 in 1968, while peak-hour passage in the Kosuge-to-Kita-Senju section grew from about 20,571 to about 51,578 over the same period. The Tobu through-section was progressively extended, reaching Kita-Kasukabe in 1966 and Tobu-Dobutsu-Koen in 1981.
The Tokyu side came with the completion of the line. On 29 August 1964 the final segment between Higashi-Ginza and Kasumigaseki opened — bringing the full Naka-Meguro–Kita-Senju route into service just before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics — and mutual through-running with the Tokyu Toyoko Line began, initially as far as Hiyoshi. Toyoko through-traffic grew more modestly than Tobu's, partly because many Toyoko-line passengers were bound for that line's Shibuya terminus rather than the Hibiya Line's stations.
The network's southern half was later dismantled. On 16 March 2013 mutual through-running with the Tokyu Toyoko Line ended: on that date the Toyoko Line instead began through-services to the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line, and the Hibiya Line link at Naka-Meguro was severed. Since then all Hibiya Line trains terminate at Naka-Meguro. The same 2013 timetable revision extended the surviving Tobu through-section over the Tobu Nikko Line to Minami-Kurihashi. Today the network runs only at the northern, Tobu end: trains through-run at Kita-Senju onto the Tobu Skytree Line (the Tobu Isesaki Line) and continue via the Tobu Nikko Line to Minami-Kurihashi, with some peak services terminating short at stations such as Takenotsuka, Kita-Koshigaya or Kita-Kasukabe. A reserved-seat TH Liner service, added on 6 June 2020, runs between the Hibiya and Tobu lines to and from Kuki. The Hibiya Line's assets, like the rest of the former Teito Rapid Transit Authority network, passed to Tokyo Metro on the Authority's privatisation in 2004.
Service pattern
Through-running today operates only at the northern end. Trains through-run at Kita-Senju onto the Tobu Skytree Line (Tobu Isesaki Line) and continue via the Tobu Nikko Line to Minami-Kurihashi; some peak-hour services terminate short at Takenotsuka, Kita-Koshigaya or Kita-Kasukabe. The reserved-seat TH Liner runs between the Hibiya and Tobu lines to and from Kuki. The former southern through-running with the Tokyu Toyoko Line at Naka-Meguro (1964–2013) has ended, and all Hibiya Line trains now terminate there.
Timeline
- 1957On 24 September 1957 the three operators — the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (the predecessor of today's Tokyo Metro), Tobu Railway and Tokyu Corporation — concluded a memorandum agreeing to run mutual through-services once the Hibiya Line opened, fixing the through-running framework before construction.
- 1962On 31 May 1962 the Hibiya Line's northern section opened and mutual through-running with the Tobu Isesaki Line began, initially running as far as Kita-Koshigaya. The Hibiya Line thereby became the first Tokyo Metro (then Teito Rapid Transit Authority) line to offer through-services with a private railway, and the second Tokyo subway line to do so after the Toei Asakusa Line.
- 1964On 29 August 1964 the final segment between Higashi-Ginza and Kasumigaseki opened, completing the full Naka-Meguro–Kita-Senju line, and mutual through-running with the Tokyu Toyoko Line began, initially running as far as Hiyoshi. The opening came just before the ceremony for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
- 1966On 1 September 1966 the Tobu Isesaki Line through-running section was extended to Kita-Kasukabe.
- 1981On 16 March 1981 the Tobu Isesaki Line through-running section was extended to Tobu-Dobutsu-Koen.
- 2013On 16 March 2013 mutual through-running with the Tokyu Toyoko Line ended, timed with the Toyoko Line's new through-service to the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line; from then on all Hibiya Line trains terminate at Naka-Meguro. On the same date the Tobu through-running section was extended over the Tobu Nikko Line to Minami-Kurihashi.
- 2020On 6 June 2020 a reserved-seat limited-stop service, the TH Liner, began operating between the Hibiya Line and the Tobu lines, running to and from Kuki via the Tobu Isesaki Line.
