History
Aibetsu Station opened on 4 November 1922 with the Railway Ministry's extension of the Sekihoku Line from Shin-Asahikawa. The route was renamed the Sekihoku West Line in 1927 and the Sekihoku Line in 1932; the line was formally redesignated the Sekihoku Main Line on 1 April 1961. Freight handling ended in November 1982 and luggage service ceased in early 1984. The station became unstaffed under the simplified-agency model in November 1984. JR Hokkaido took it over at privatisation on 1 April 1987, and the current station building dates from a 1976 reconstruction. The simple-agency arrangement ended in 2003.
