History

Ikaushi Station opened on 1922-11-04 as a general station when the Ministry of Railways completed the Sekihoku Line between Shin-Asahikawa and Aibetsu. The line was renamed Sekihoku West in 1927, Sekihoku in 1932, and Sekihoku Main Line in 1961. Freight handling ended in November 1962, parcel handling and staff in January 1983 with the introduction of CTC signalling, when the station became simply commissioned. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at the 1987 privatisation and rebuilt it in 1988 in a log-cabin style using local timber sold as a specialty by the area's forestry cooperative. Track improvements completed that November contributed to faster express running times. The simple commissioning ended on 1992-04-01, leaving the station fully unstaffed.

Notes

The station name is the Japanese reading of the Ainu place name i-ika-us-i, glossed variously as 'a place where one crosses over' or 'a place that always overflows'.
