History

Fukagawa opened on 16 July 1898 as a general station on the Hokkaido Public Railway Kamikawa Line when the section from Sorachibuto to Asahikawa came into service. On 23 November 1910 the privately-built Rumoe Line opened to Rumoe, and on 25 October 1924 the Uryū Line (later the Shinmei Line) opened to Tadoshi. The station was transferred to Japanese National Railways on 1 June 1949 and the current station building was completed on 30 June 1960. The Hakodate Main Line section through Fukagawa was electrified at 20 kV/50 Hz on 1 October 1969. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Hokkaido; the Shinmei Line closed on 4 September 1995, the line to Rumoi was renamed Rumoi Main Line on 1 April 1997, and that line was abolished on 1 April 2026. Kitaca acceptance on the Hakodate Main Line began on 16 March 2024.

Notes

Fukagawa was a major operational hub in the line's heyday, with multiple sidings, a locomotive depot and a turntable supporting the now-closed Shinmei Line. The local sweet 'Uroko-dango' is a station speciality; bento boxes were sold here until they were discontinued.
