History

Kawayu-Onsen Station opened on 20 April 1930 as a station on the Japanese Government Railways Senmō Main Line, lying 86.4 km from the line's starting point at Higashi-Kushiro. The present wooden station building — built in a half-timbered mountain-cabin style using yew (ichii) logs and including a VIP room reflecting its proximity to an Imperial Estate — was completed in 1936. After the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Hokkaido, and it received its current name on 13 March 1988. It is now unstaffed and lies about four kilometres from Kawayu Onsen itself; bus services link the two and the stop also serves as a gateway to Akan-Mashū National Park.

Notes

The 1936 wooden station building was constructed using yew logs in a half-timbered mountain-cabin style, and includes a dedicated VIP room — a feature owed to the nearby Imperial Estate it served.
