History

Hoshimi Station opened on 16 March 1995 as a petition station on the Hakodate Main Line between Zenibako and Hoshioki, built to serve residential subdivisions developed by JR Hokkaido Land Development and Iwakura Land Development. The north entrance opened with the station; ticket machines followed in 1999 and the south entrance with automated turnstiles was added on 31 March 2000. Station numbering was introduced on 1 October 2007, and the Kitaca contactless smart card began service on 25 October 2008. From the timetable revision of 16 March 2024, the station is also served by the rapid Niseko Liner and daytime rapid Airport trains.

Notes

Hoshimi is the only JR Hokkaido station whose name is written entirely in hiragana — the name was taken from the nearby Hoshimi Bridge, evoking the hoshi ('star') motif of the surrounding Hoshioki district.
