History

Teine Station opened on 1880-11-28 with the through-running of the government-built Horonai Railway between Temiya and Sapporo, initially as the flag-stop Karugawa Station. It was upgraded to a full station in 1884, passed to the Hokkaido Colliery & Railway in 1889, and was nationalised in 1906. The line through the station was double-tracked in 1909 and folded into the Hakodate Main Line on 1909-10-12. The stop was renamed Teine on 1952-11-15 to match the renamed surrounding town, and the Sapporo Depot opened alongside in 1965. Electrification reached the station in 1968, and a fourth-generation elevated building opened in 2002.
