History
Shinrin-Kōen Station opened on 20 September 1984 as a passenger station of the Japanese National Railways Hakodate Main Line, having broken ground on 30 November 1983. The name was adopted at the request of local residents and reflected both the nearby Nopporo Shinrin-Kōen Prefectural Natural Park and the contemporary 'Shinrin-Kōen Park Town' housing development. At privatisation on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Hokkaido. Automated ticket gates entered service on 9 December 1998, day-to-day operation was placed under contract on 1 April 2004, lifts were installed on 2 February 2006, and ICard Kitaca service began on 25 October 2008. The station is Sapporo's easternmost.

The clock face mounted on the brick-clad station building was designed to represent the Hokkaido Centennial Memorial Tower that until 2023 stood in Nopporo Shinrin-Kōen Park.
