History

Susukino Station, station N08 on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Namboku Line, opened on 1971-12-16 with the Kita-Nijūyo-Jō to Makomanai inaugural section. A separate Susukino tram stop on the Yamahana Line traces its origins to 1918-08-12 as Susukino-kōban-mae on the Sapporo Electric Tramway. The tram was municipalised in 1927, the stop renamed Susukino in 1949, and the once-terminating tracks were finally rejoined to Nishi-Yon-Chōme in December 2015 to create a loop. The subway station underwent major remodelling between 2003 and 2008, adding lifts, a northern concourse and an escalator. Numbered N08 in January 2006, the platform gained automatic platform doors on 2012-10-25, and the new COCONO SUSUKINO complex restored exit 5 in 2023.

Notes

The chain of underground arcades and passages linking Susukino, Ōdōri, Sapporo Subway, JR Sapporo and Sapporo Elplaza runs about two kilometres north-to-south — the longest straight underground pedestrian route in Japan.
