History
Rankoshi Station opened on 1904-10-15 as an intermediate stop on the private Hokkaido Railway during its extension northward toward Otaru. After nationalisation of the Hokkaido Railway on 1907-07-01 the line passed to Japanese Government Railways, and on 1909-10-12 the station became part of the Hakodate Main Line. The Niseko express stopped here from 1981-10-01 until that service ended on 1986-11-01; freight handling ended in 1982 and the station was unstaffed in 1984, becoming simple-commission operated by the local municipality. With the privatisation of JNR on 1987-04-01 control passed to JR Hokkaido, and station numbering S27 was introduced on 2007-10-01.

Notes
Although now mostly a local stop, Rankoshi remains the origin point of one daily inbound Rapid Niseko Liner service to Sapporo.
