History

Higashi-Mori Station first opened on 25 December 1927 as a temporary stop on the Oshima Seaside Railway between an interim east-Mori terminus and Sawara, but was abolished on 13 September 1928 when the line was extended west to Mori Station. The station was reopened on 1 July 1934 at a new location toward Ōnuma as a Oshima Seaside Railway general station. Following the line's nationalisation on 25 January 1945 it became part of JNR's Hakodate Main Line. Freight handling ended in 1965, the station was destaffed in 1971, and the present reinforced-concrete building dates from 30 March 1979.

Notes

The station's distinctive depot has a near-triangular front profile with a red roof that runs all the way down to ground level — an unusual silhouette for a JR Hokkaido suburban stop.
