History
Izumisawa Station opened on 25 October 1930 as an intermediate stop on the Government Railways' Kamiiso Line, which was renamed the Esashi Line on 10 November 1936. Freight operations ceased on 12 December 1970, and parcel handling along with staffing ended on 15 November 1982. With the JNR split on 1 April 1987 the station came under JR Hokkaido. On 13 March 1988, in connection with the Seikan Tunnel-linked Tsugaru-Kaikyō Line, the section was electrified at 20 kV AC and the depot was rebuilt later that year. On 26 March 2016, with the opening of the Hokkaidō Shinkansen, the Goryōkaku - Kikonai segment was transferred to the South Hokkaido Railway Company.
