History

Shukunohe Station opened on 5 August 1954 as a station of the Hachinohe Line under Japan National Railways (JNR), in what is now the town of Hirono in Iwate Prefecture. Upon the 1 April 1987 privatisation of JNR, the station came under the operational control of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The line was suspended on 11 March 2011 by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and operations resumed on 17 March 2012. On 1 April 2022 the position of Kuji stationmaster was abolished and the station passed under Hachinohe's jurisdiction. The station has a single ground-level side platform with a small shelter and no full station building, and remains unstaffed.
