History
Rikuchu-Osato Station opened on 1 December 1960 as a Japan National Railways stop on the Hanawa Line, serving the village of Hachimantai in Akita Prefecture. It handled diesel-railcar passengers only and was unstaffed from the outset. The station was absorbed into JR East at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 and remains administered remotely from the Morioka cluster center. It has a single side platform with a small waiting room on the platform. Eki-Net Q-ticket service was added on 1 October 2024, but the station continues to operate without on-site staff.

Notes
The station has been unstaffed since the day it opened, never having a ticket window in its 60-year-plus history.
