History
Moritake Station opened on 1 August 1902 as a Japanese Government Railways stop serving the village of Moriokamura in Akita. The JGR became JNR after the war, and the station was absorbed into JR East at the privatisation on 1 April 1987. Freight handling ended in October 1981 and luggage in March 1985, after which the station became unstaffed and ran as simple consignment from November 1986. The middle track was removed around 2004 when the Akita-side bridge was replaced, leaving two opposed platforms. Limited-express Tsugaru and seasonal Resort Shirakami services call here.

Notes
The local place name was once read "Morioka"; the station's reading was deliberately set as "Moritake" to avoid confusion with the Tohoku Main Line's Morioka Station, and the place name later followed the station's reading.
