History

Maeda-Minami Station opened on 15 October 1963 as a Japan National Railways stop serving the town of Moriyoshi in Akita Prefecture, on what is now the Akita Nairiku Line. The line was privatised on 1 November 1986, when the station passed to the third-sector Akita Nairiku Jukan Railway. The unattended station consists of one side platform serving a single bi-directional track and stands on the Ani River about 21 km from the line's northern terminus at Takanosu. In autumn 2016 it became the centre of a brief tourist surge, fielding a temporary stop on what would otherwise be express services.

Notes

After the 2016 animated film Your Name went viral, fans identified Maeda-Minami as resembling a station depicted in the movie, and the operator ran an express stopping pattern at the platform between 7 October and 6 November that year.
