History

Shiraikaigan Station opened on 22 December 1984 as a stop on Sanriku Railway's then-new Kita-Rias Line, established to compensate for the contraction of local bus services after the line came into operation. For years only four of the daily 27 trains called here, the only scheduled through-runs of the Kita-Rias Line. Service was suspended after the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami and was restored on 1 April 2012 when the Rikuchu-Noda to Tanohata section reopened. On 23 March 2019 the unified Rias Line absorbed the station as an intermediate stop. The platform sits between two tunnels, with no station building.

Notes

The platform is sandwiched between two tunnels, with no station building or even a toilet on site; the public phone box outside still stands although its handset has been removed.
