History

Shimanokoshi Station opened on 1 April 1984 as a stop on the Sanriku Railway, the same day that the former JNR Kuji Line was privatised. Selected as one of the Tōhoku Top 100 Stations in 2002, its octagonal Mediterranean-style building was destroyed by the 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake tsunami, which swept away the platform and elevated trackbed; reconstruction work began on 9 December 2013 about 100 metres north of the original site. Services on the Iwaizumi-Omoto - Tanohata section resumed on 6 April 2014 even though the new building was not yet finished; the replacement structure entered service on 27 July 2014 with funding support from the State of Kuwait.

Notes

Reconstruction of the post-tsunami station was funded in part by the State of Kuwait, and the rebuilt octagonal tower preserves the silhouette of the original Mediterranean-style 1984 building.
