History

Kamiyonai Station sits on the JR East Yamada Line in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, 9.9 kilometres from the line's terminus at Morioka. It opened as the terminal station of the line on 10 October 1923 and became an intermediate stop on 25 September 1928 when the rails were extended to Kuzakai. Freight handling ended on 1 January 1971 and parcel service on 1 February 1984. The station was absorbed into JR East at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The Kamiyonai stationmaster post was abolished in February 2002 in favour of Morioka oversight. Cloud-funded interior and exterior renovations to the original wooden station building were carried out on 29 April 2020, with the station becoming unstaffed throughout the day from 22 April 2018.

Notes

Since the closure of nearby Ōshida and Asagishi, the 25.7-kilometre gap between Kamiyonai and Kuzakai has been the longest distance between adjacent stations on any JR East conventional line.
