History

Kamimorioka Station is on the JR East Yamada Line in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, 2.8 rail kilometres from the line's terminus at Morioka. It opened on 10 October 1923. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1981 and parcel service on 15 November 1982, the same day passing-loop equipment was removed and the station became dispatch-only with staff sent over from Morioka. The site became part of JR East on 1 April 1987 and was fully unstaffed from 1 April 1998. The original station building, once paired with a Kiosk, was rebuilt as a small waiting-room-only structure in 1983, then rebuilt again on conversion to unstaffed operation; the current shelter has no ticket gate.

Notes

Shishinai Kin'ichirō, known as "the father of Iwate baseball," once served as stationmaster here — a tie commemorated locally even as the station itself shrank to an unstaffed shelter.
