History

Iwate-Iioka Station traces its origins to the Chūzū Signal Box opened on 11 October 1944, which was promoted to full station status under the present name on 1 September 1950. Freight handling ended on 1 July 1970 and parcel handling in August 1971, and the station was destaffed before Morioka began dispatching staff from 1986. JR privatisation transferred ownership to JR East on 1 April 1987, and a contract-operation arrangement followed in March 1994. Construction of a bridge-style station building and free passage began on 17 April 2021 and entered service on 18 December 2022. Suica acceptance and Eki-Net Q-chiket began on 27 May 2023 and 1 October 2023 respectively.

Notes

When the bus stop in front of the new west entrance opened on 7 December 2022 it absorbed traffic previously handled by Tonan Bus Terminal, which closed at the end of September 2022 after all routes were withdrawn.
