History
Matsukusa Station opened on 31 October 1930 as the eastern terminus of the Yamada Line during its construction phase, becoming a through station one year later when the line was extended further to Hiratsudo. Freight handling ended on 15 March 1972 and parcel service plus station staffing on 15 November 1982. JNR's 1987 privatisation passed the stop to JR East. Mudslide damage closed the station from 11 December 2015 until 5 November 2017, when service between Kamiyonai and Kawauchi was restored. The level-crossing-served island platform from earlier years has been reduced to a single side platform with a shelter.

Notes
Matsukusa was knocked out of service for nearly two years by the 2015 mudslide that closed the Yamada Line's central section, reopening only in November 2017 once the Kamiyonai-Kawauchi reconstruction was complete.
