History
Hakoishi Station opened on 30 November 1933 as part of the Japanese Government Railways' Yamada Line in what is now Miyako, Iwate Prefecture. Aion Typhoon damage in September 1948 closed the station — formally from 26 November of that year — until 21 November 1954. Freight handling ended on 1 November 1969 and parcel service on 15 August 1971, leaving the station unstaffed. JNR's 1987 privatisation transferred it to JR East. The original station building below platform level is gone; a small waiting room now stands in its place beside a single side platform.

Notes
The 1948 Aion Typhoon closed the central Yamada Line so badly that Hakoishi spent six full years out of service before reopening in November 1954.
