History

Tsugaruishi Station opened on 17 November 1935 as a Japanese Government Railways stop on the Yamada Line in what is now Miyako, Iwate. JNR's 1987 privatisation transferred it to JR East. The 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami destroyed the station, along with a KiHa 100-series train that had been standing there at the time. The line and station were rebuilt as part of a long Yamada Line reconstruction project; on 23 March 2019 the reopened Miyako-Kamaishi section was transferred from JR East to Sanriku Railway and folded into the new Rias Line, with the rebuilt Tsugaruishi reopening as a Sanriku Railway station on the same day.
