History

Kariwano Station opened on 21 August 1904 under the Japanese Government Railways, serving the town of Kariwano in Senboku District, Akita Prefecture. Freight handling ended on 20 September 1978 and parcel service in March 1985, with the station becoming unstaffed and simply contracted in November 1986. Privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 transferred operation to JR East. A new two-storey reinforced-concrete station building opened on 28 September 1990, with adjacent road improvements that allowed scheduled bus services to reach the forecourt; the new building incorporates offices for the local chamber of commerce. Although the Akita Shinkansen does not stop here, Track 1 has a dual-gauge rail to allow trains to pass.

Notes

Although Akita Shinkansen Komachi services don't stop here, the down platform serves the dual-gauge track and so retains a usable boarding edge for shinkansen-gauge trains.
