History

Ugo-Honjō Station opened on 30 June 1922 on the Uetsu Main Line, serving the city of Honjō in Akita Prefecture. The Yashima Line, branching from the station, was privatised on 1 October 1985, becoming the Chōkai Sanroku Line of the third-sector Yuri Kōgen Railway. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, JR East assumed operation of the station, which also serves as a freight terminal for JR Freight. The four-track layout with two island platforms supports interchange between the JR Uetsu Main Line and Yuri Kōgen's 23-kilometre Chōkai Sanroku Line, whose opposing terminus lies at Yashima Station.
