History

Ryōishi Station opened on 23 July 1951 as an intermediate station on the Japanese National Railways' Yamada Line, in coastal Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture. It was absorbed into the JR East network at the privatisation of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Operations on the Yamada Line between Miyako and Kamaishi were suspended after the 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami; the station was rebuilt along with the rest of the closed segment, and on 23 March 2019 the segment was transferred to the third-sector Sanriku Railway and incorporated into the unified Rias Line, joining the former Kita-Rias and Minami-Rias lines.
