History
Yanagihara Station opened on 15 May 1963 as a newly built Japanese National Railways station for diesel-rail passenger service only, as an unstaffed halt. The station passed to JR East on 1 April 1987 at the JNR privatisation, and the Eki-net Q-Chiket service started on 1 October 2024.

Notes
Yanagihara has only one side platform serving a single bi-directional track, and four-car trains overshoot it — about one and a half cars at the rear hang off the end of the platform when a four-car train calls. Until the 2018 timetable revision, one early-morning service bound for Yokote skipped the station.
