History

Hirakura Station opened on 23 November 1915 as a station on the Iwate Light Railway, a 762 mm gauge line running 65.4 kilometres from Hanamaki to the now-defunct Sennintōge Station. The light railway was nationalised in 1936, and the route became part of the Kamaishi Line. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, Hirakura passed to East Japan Railway Company. The station has one side platform serving a single bi-directional track and is unattended; it lies 56.6 rail kilometres from the line's terminus at Hanamaki.
