History
Kisakata Station opened on 15 November 1921 as a station on the JGR Rikuusai Line. On 20 April 1924 it was transferred to the Uetsu Main Line, where it remains today. A new station building was completed in November 1966, and the station was renovated in October 2012 ahead of the 2013 Akita Destination Campaign. With the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR East.

Notes
The station was selected as one of the Tōhoku Top 100 Stations in 2002. The 2012 refurbishment took inspiration from haiku poet Matsuo Bashō, who visited the nearby scenic Kisakata coast on his Oku no Hosomichi journey; the waiting room is decorated with shōji-style screens depicting Mount Chōkai and the local Kujūkushima.
