History

Tōni Station opened on 1 April 1984 on the third-sector Sanriku Railway in the city of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture. The 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami swept away part of the tracks on the former Minami-Rias Line and suspended services. The line resumed operations on 3 April 2013 between Sakari and Yoshihama, with through service to Kamaishi restored on 5 April 2014. On 23 March 2019 the Minami-Rias Line, a portion of the former JR Yamada Line and the Kita-Rias Line were combined into the unified Rias Line, leaving Tōni as an intermediate station. The station has a single elevated island platform and is unattended.
