History

Maesawa Station opened on 1 November 1890 as a station on what became the Tōhoku Main Line, in what is now Ōshū, Iwate. It was absorbed into JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. A new station building was completed in 2005, with an elevated structure and a footbridge connecting one side platform and one island platform. The station carries a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office. In fiscal 2018 it averaged 507 boarding passengers per day. The station sits 459.9 kilometres along the line from the official Tokyo Station origin.
