History

Hanaizumi Station opened on 1890-04-16 on what is now the Tōhoku Main Line in present-day Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture. Freight handling ended on 1982-11-15 and parcel handling on 1985-03-14. It transferred to JR East at the 1987-04-01 privatisation of the Japanese National Railways, and operations were contracted out from 2003-10-01. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 2015-05-19, and the station became fully unattended on 2022-03-12. Before the Tōhoku Shinkansen opened in 1982 the station was a stop for express services that connected with bus routes coming in from neighbouring Fujisawa via the Kitakami River bridge.
