History

Naruko-Onsen Station opened on 18 April 1915 as Narugo Station (鳴子駅) on the Rikuu East Line in what is now Ōsaki, Miyagi. It served as the line's operational hub, with most trains turning back here. The current station building was completed on 20 December 1991, incorporating a small theatre and community rooms; some two-thirds of its 622-square-metre floor area is locally administered space rather than railway space. The station transferred to East Japan Railway Company (JR East) on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways, was renamed to its present form on 22 March 1997, and was selected as one of the Top 100 Stations of Tōhoku in 2002.

Notes

Inside the station ticket gate, passengers can soak in a small hinoki-wood ashiyu (foot bath) called "Poppo no Ashiyu," reflecting the station's role as the gateway to Naruko Onsen.
