History

Akakura-Onsen Station opened on 1 November 1917 as Tomisawa Station (富沢駅) on the Rikuu East Line in what is now the town of Mogami, Yamagata. It was renamed Uzen-Akakura Station (羽前赤倉駅) on 15 November 1952. Freight handling ended on 30 November 1971, parcel handling and the passing loop on 7 March 1983, and the station moved to a simplified-contracted unstaffed arrangement that lapsed in 1991. The station joined East Japan Railway Company (JR East) on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways, was renamed to its present form on 4 December 1999, and had its station building refurbished in August 2008.

Notes

Despite the station's name, Akakura Onsen itself lies somewhat south of the station building — the renamed-to-resort branding came in 1999 rather than reflecting any move of the platform closer to the springs.
