History
Minami-Shinjō Station opened on 20 December 1960 on the Rikuu East Line in the city of Shinjō, Yamagata, 89.2 kilometres from the line's terminus at Kogota. The unstaffed station has a single side platform serving one bidirectional Rikuu East track; a separate Ōu Main Line track used by the Yamagata Shinkansen passes through the same site without any platform. The station joined East Japan Railway Company (JR East) on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways.

Notes
The Yamagata Shinkansen passes directly through Minami-Shinjō on the Ōu Main Line track, but there is no platform on that side — only the parallel Rikuu East track is accessible to passengers.
