History

Kobato Station opened on 1 October 1944 as Kobato Signal Box under the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Passenger handling began in July 1946, and the facility was upgraded to a full station on 1 February 1950, taking its current name. Parcel handling ceased on 1 September 1972 and the station became unattended. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, operation passed to the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The station is on the Uetsu Main Line, serving the city of Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture, and is managed remotely from Sakata Station.
