History

Rikuzen-Toyosato Station opened on 24 October 1968 as a Japanese National Railways station on the Yanaizu Line, in the city of Tome, Miyagi Prefecture. The line was renamed the Kesennuma Line on 11 December 1977, transferring the station to that line. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, operation passed to the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It lies 10.3 rail kilometres from the Kesennuma Line's terminus at Maeyachi. Originally fitted with a single island platform and two tracks, it was the only intermediate station on the rail section to support train crossings; as of May 2025 only one face and track remain in use. The Kesennuma Line BRT bypasses this station.
