History

Echigo-Kangawa Station is an Uetsu Main Line stop in the city of Murakami, Niigata Prefecture, operated by JR East. The station opened on 31 July 1924 with the extension between Murakami and Nezugaseki. Parcel delivery handling ended in 1969, freight in 1972, and parcel acceptance in 1985, at which point the station became unstaffed under a simple contract arrangement. The current station building dates to October 1998. The station was absorbed into JR East at the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, and the simple contract was discontinued on 1 April 2006. Since 2012 the station has been maintained by a JR East retiree appointed as honorary stationmaster.
