History
Rikuzen-Akai Station opened on 22 November 1928 as a station on the privately operated Miyagi Electric Railway, the predecessor of the Senseki Line. Nationalisation followed on 1 May 1944, and the station passed to JR East at privatisation in April 1987. Damage from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami forced the line to close on 11 March 2011; service between Yamoto and Ishinomaki resumed on 16 July that year, with a provisional station building. A permanent replacement opened on 4 February 2012, and the station became a stop on the Senseki-Tōhoku Line rapid services from May 2015.
