History

Yamoto Station opened on 22 November 1928 as a station on the Miyagi Electric Railway. The line was nationalised on 1 May 1944, making it a Ministry of Transport and Communications stop, and freight and parcel handling were progressively withdrawn by 1984. At the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station was transferred to JR East. On 11 March 2011 the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami damaged the Senseki Line and service was suspended; the Ishinomaki end reopened on 16 July 2011, the section to Rikuzen-Ono on 17 March 2012, and through service to Sendai resumed on 30 May 2015 with the launch of the Senseki-Tōhoku Line.
