History

Shibahashi Station opened on 25 December 1951 on the Aterazawa Line, 22.3 km from the line's start at Kita-Yamagata and 2 km short of the Aterazawa terminus. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station came under JR East. From July 2001 service was temporarily replaced by buses while Sagae Station was relocated; trains returned in February 2002 and a new waiting room opened the same year. The station has only a single short side platform — too short for four- or six-car trains, which use "door cut" with only the front two cars opening their doors. The station has been unstaffed for decades and is managed remotely from Sagae Station.

Notes

The platform is only two cars long, so four- and six-car trains operate "door cut" — only the front two cars open their doors.
