History
Nishi-Sagae Station opened on 25 December 1951 as one of five new infill stations added between existing stops along the Aterazawa Line that day, alongside Higashi-Kanae, Uzen-Kanazawa, Minami-Sagae, and Shibahashi. The station passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. During the relocation works at neighbouring Sagae Station, trains between Uzen-Nagasaki and Aterazawa were replaced by buses from July 2001 until 16 February 2002, when the current station building came into use. In November 2004, a prefectural road bridge was completed directly overhead, improving access to Yamagata Prefectural Sagae High School and providing the platform with effective overhead shelter from rain.

Notes
A prefectural road built across the station in 2004 doubles as overhead rain cover for the platform.
