History
The station opened on 10 April 1928 as Ōtsuka Station on the Miyagi Electric Railway, and was relocated to its current site on 1 December 1931. The line was nationalised on 1 May 1944, at which point the station was renamed Rikuzen-Ōtsuka. Service was suspended for a year from June 1945, resuming in June 1946. A passing loop was added on 1 March 1988, and the station joined JR East at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Suica became usable from 26 October 2003. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami forced closure on 11 March 2011; service was restored on 30 May 2015 with a new waiting room, though Senseki-Tōhoku Line trains do not stop here.
