History

Rikuzen-Takasago Station opened on 5 June 1925 as a stop on the privately operated Miyagi Electric Railway, serving Fukumuro on the eastern fringe of what is now Sendai. The line was taken into government hands on 1 May 1944 and became part of Japanese National Railways; on privatisation on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. The original layout used an island platform shared with Fukudamachi-bound trains, but it was later reorganised into the present two opposed side platforms. A replacement station building entered service in June 2011, and from 2013 day-to-day operations were contracted out to a JR East subsidiary. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket counter closed on 15 April 2022.
