History
Aoba-dōri Station opened on 11 March 2000 as the new western terminus of the Senseki Line, replacing the line's earlier above-ground platforms at Sendai Station with an underground extension beneath Aobadōri Avenue. The station sits on three subterranean levels, with an island platform on the second basement and a transfer concourse on the third connecting to the Sendai Subway Namboku Line at Sendai Station. The hiragana spelling あおば通 was chosen at the naming stage to give the station a more approachable feel. Operations were progressively contracted out to a JR East subsidiary, culminating in October 2017, and the Midori no Madoguchi ticket counter closed on 31 January 2022.
