History

Murakami Station opened on 1 November 1914 when the state-run Murakami Line was extended from Nakajō. The station was a general (passenger and freight) station from the start. The Uetsu Main Line through Murakami to Nezugaseki opened on 31 July 1924, and on 5 August 1972 the line was fully electrified — with 1,500 V DC south of Murakami and 20 kV / 50 Hz AC to the north, making the station the change-over point. The present third-generation building dates from 31 May 1964 and was given a retro-style refurbishment in July 2005. Suica acceptance began on 1 April 2014. The station passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.

Notes

The platform departure melody at Murakami is "Kisha" ("Train"), the children's song composed by local-born Aira Ōwada — adopted as the boarding chime in March 2014.
