History

Minami-Sendai Station opened on 10 September 1924 under the name Rikuzen-Nakata Station, then in Nakata Village, Natori County. Daily traffic in the opening year averaged about 200 passengers, and the station was also used to ship locally grown Sendai hakusai cabbage. Nakata Village was absorbed into Sendai in 1941, and on 25 May 1963 the station was renamed Minami-Sendai. By 1978 average daily ridership had risen to around 2,300, of which about 70 per cent were season-ticket holders. The station passed to JR East with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and from 1 October 2017 routine operations have been contracted out to a JR East subsidiary.
