Shikinosato Station opened on 2007-10-13 on the Yamagata Railway's Flower Nagai Line in Shirataka, Yamagata. The town requested the new station after a land-readjustment project promised population growth in the surrounding area and because the spot lay close to the old town centre. The station name "Shiki-no-sato" (Village of the Four Seasons) was chosen from public submissions: a selection committee picked it for its evocative imagery, and the same name had been independently proposed by nineteen separate respondents. The station opened with the present single side platform serving traffic in both directions, with a ramp added for accessibility.
