History

Mitazono Station opened on 18 March 2007 together with the Sendai Airport Line operated by Sendai Airport Transit, a third-sector railway joining the city to the airport. The station was renamed from its working title "Shimomasuda" in August 2005 before opening. Built as an elevated island platform with two bidirectional tracks, it functions as the line's principal passing point: rapid trains may overtake here, and platform 2 is used mainly when crossings are scheduled. Service was suspended by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami on 11 March and resumed on 1 October the same year. Surrounding suburban development has driven steady patronage growth.

Notes

From 26 September 2023, in a tie-up with the TV Asahi drama "Kaseifu no Mitazono," the station signage was temporarily changed to read "Kaseifu no Mitazono Station" and platform announcements were recorded by lead actor Masahiro Matsuoka.
